Jury MembersKurt W. Forster, Chair, Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, is a member of the jury for the Canadian Governor General's Awards in Architecture, president of the Alberto Giacometti Foundation in Zurich and holds an honorary doctorate from The New School for Social Research in New York. Forster's writings range from historical scholarship to critical interpretations of leading contemporary architects. Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is one of Canada's most respected and accomplished landscape architects. Her work is well known for its integration of landscape design, architecture and the natural environment. She was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1990. Oberlander is a Fellow of the Canadian and American Society of Landscape Architects and winner of the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in 1992. Ydessa Hendeles is the director and curator of the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation, Canada's only privately funded contemporary art museum. She is a "Grand Founder" of the Art Gallery of Ontario, a member of the International Councils of the Tate Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as MoMA's photography acquisition committee. She was invested into the Order of Ontario in 1988. Terence Riley is Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His shows at MoMA include the work of Bernard Tschumi, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Lloyd Wright. Riley was a Staff Liaison to MoMA's Architect Selection Committee for the competition to design the expansion of the museum. Gerald Sheff is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Gluskin Sheff + Associates Inc. A graduate of the School of Architecture at McGill University, Sheff completed his Masters of Business Administration degree at Harvard University and went on to hold a variety of senior positions with the Cadillac Fairview Corporation for thirteen years before starting Gluskin Sheff + Associates. He is active in many community and charitable organizations. Sheff is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. PROFESSIONAL ADVISORSDetlef Mertins, Assistant Dean of the School of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto, is the Professional Advisor for the Competition. He completed his professional studies at the University of Toronto and received his doctorate in architecture from Princeton. He is the author of numerous essays on the history and theory of architecture, landscape and urban design in the 20th century and the editor of scholarly works on architecture and architects. In 1998, Mertins was a Visiting Scholar at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. He was recently visiting professor at Princeton University, Harvard University, Rice University and the University of Waterloo.
