Planting of the Canada Forest

The Canada Forest is the jewel in the Tree City Design for Downsview Park. Phase One in the development of the forest has already begun, with 30,000 trees ranging from alder and aspen to walnut and willows planted since the spring of 2006. Intended to reflect the beauty of the Canadian landscape, the Canada Forest is one of the defining characteristics of the country's newest urban green space.

The Canada Forest initiative reflects Downsview Park's commitment to sustainable development by growing a self-sufficient forest ecosystem that will mature during the next 50 years.

"The Forest is a tangible expression of our promise to build a park for future generations," says Tony Genco, Downsview Park President and CEO. "We demonstrate the value we place on cultivating a healthy and sustainable forest ecology at every level from design to implementation of its growth," he explains.

As the forest matures special habitats will be created to attract a variety of wildlife and birds that will one day call the Canada Forest their home. Features including pathways, rest stops and interpretive signage will add to the recreational and educational elements of the park experience. Intergenerational and multicultural events and programs are planned to support the upkeep and maintenance of the forest, and to develop connections and a sense of ownership between the community and the forest to groom the future stewards of this legacy-building feature of Downsview Park.

Over the course of the next 50 years the Canada Forest will become a dynamic and robust ecosystem capable of adjusting to the stresses of an urban landscape, providing an iconic symbol of beauty and sustainability for all Canadians to enjoy.
